NEW SURVEY FINDS THE NUMBER OF HAIR RESTORATION PROCEDURES PERFORMED WORLDWIDE INCREASED 11 PERCENT

New York hair restoration experts cite more middle-aged men and women

seeking permanent solution for hair loss

New York, New York October 31, 2011. According to statistics released from a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) – the world’s leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration – lackluster worldwide economic growth in 2010 did not put the brakes on the number of people investing in hair restoration surgery to treat hair loss.

Approximately 279,381 hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide in 2010, up 11 percent from 2008.  This increase coincides with a significant jump in the total number of hair restoration patients worldwide – from 811,363 patients in 2008 to 923,599 patients in 2010.

Hair is an integral part of our identity, and hair loss has been shown to have a negative impact on a person’s overall quality of life,” said Drs. Robert True and Robert Dorin of True and Dorin Medical Group located in New York City. “Whether you are looking for an edge in the workplace or more satisfaction in your personal life, hair restoration surgery offers the inherent benefits of looking younger and feeling more self-confident that many people are finding is well worth the investment.”

While some might think that only older men are undergoing hair restoration surgery, the survey found that the majority (83 percent) of first time hair restoration patients in 2010 were between 30 and 49 years old.  In addition, although the majority of hair restoration patients are men, women are increasingly seeking help for hair loss.  In 2010, 85.9 percent of all hair restoration surgical patients worldwide were male and 14.1 percent were female.  Since 2004, the number of female surgical hair restoration patients worldwide increased 24 percent.

“In our practice, we have noticed similar trends over the years of younger patients and more women seeking treatment for hair loss,” said Dr True and Dr. Dorin. “With hair loss, the key is to seek help early to prevent future hair loss.  This survey shows that people are heeding this advice and not delaying treatment until they are older or their hair loss becomes more noticeable.”
