Hair Transplant Options for Women
Thanks to advanced hair techniques such as follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE), hair transplant surgery can meet the diverse needs of countless patients. Dr. Robert H. True and Dr. Robert J. Dorin have helped so many patients from New York City and Long Island, NY, creating custom hair restoration solutions that are effective and lead to natural results.
While many of our patients are men, we are also able to treat hair loss experienced by women. Let’s take a moment to consider the basics of female hair loss and consider some treatment options for hair thinning and hair loss in women.
How Common Is Hair Loss in Women?
According to numbers from the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 50 percent of women will experience noticeable hair thinning and hair loss during their life.
While medical conditions, hormone changes, hairstyles that tug/pull on the scalp, and physical trauma to the scalp can lead to hair loss, the most common cause of noticeable hair loss in women is female-pattern hair loss (FPHL), which affects approximately 30 million Americans.
Differences Compared to Male Hair Loss
Female pattern hair loss is different from male pattern baldness.
In male pattern baldness, the pattern of hair thinning tends to start around the front of the hairline as well as the crown of the scalp. The receding hairline and hair loss continues in this pattern for men to varying degrees.
In female pattern baldness, the hair loss tends to be distributed throughout the scalp, though it is sometimes concentrated near the front of the hairline. Some other patches of hair loss may be localized elsewhere. This presents a number of unique considerations for hair restoration specialists when treating female hair loss.
FUT and FUE for Women
When women are missing large patches of hair from a portion of the scalp, FUT or FUE may be used to restore hair growth. We’ve helped a number of patients from the five boroughs as well as Long Island by performing these hair transplant surgeries.
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) - This transplant technique harvests a strip of donor hair from part of the scalp.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) - This transplant technique takes individual hair follicles from the donor site of the scalp.
The ideal hair transplant technique will depend on the nature and extent of the patient’s hair loss and the health of her hair in the donor area.
Non-Surgical Hair Restoration for Women
In addition to the hair transplant options above, there are a number of non-surgical options for hair restoration to consider as well:
- Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy - PRP involves the injection of platelets derived from a patient's own blood. Placing this refined plasma stimulates hair regrowth and helps prevent hair loss.
- Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) - LLLT uses laser light to help stimulate hair regrowth in the scalp while also reducing hair loss and thinning.
- Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) - SMP involves the use of realistic tattoos to help camouflage thinning of the hair. This creates the illusion of greater hair density.
