Hair Transplant Aftercare: What to Do and Avoid
Why Postoperative Hair Transplant Behaviors Matter
After a hair restoration procedure, how patients care for their scalp during the early days and weeks of the recovery timeline plays a meaningful role in healing and long-term outcomes. While each patient receives personalized instructions based on their procedure, there are general behaviors that many hair restoration patients commonly follow.
This guide outlines commonly recommended postoperative dos and do nots to help support comfort, safety, and the protection of newly transplanted grafts.
What Patients Commonly Do after Hair Restoration
Follow the Clinic’s Specific Aftercare Instructions
Each procedure is unique. Following the directions provided during discharge on surgery day is one of the most important steps a patient can take after surgery.
Use Shampoo & Cleansing Techniques Recommended or Provided by the Clinic
Patients are typically guided on when to begin washing their scalp and how to do so gently to help soften scabs and keep the scalp clean without disturbing transplanted follicles.
Take Medications as Directed
Pain medications, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory prescriptions are often provided. Most patients take these exactly as instructed to help support comfort and recovery.
Wear Loose, Adjustable Headwear if Needed
If head coverings are permitted, they are usually limited to loose-fitting, adjustable options that minimize contact with grafted areas.
Protect the Scalp Outdoors
Most patients avoid direct sun exposure on the scalp. When outside, they often wear approved headwear or apply sunblock to protect sensitive skin once allowed by the clinic.
Activity & Lifestyle Guidance after a Hair Transplant
Exercise & Physical Activity
Because physical activity increases blood flow to the scalp, many clinics recommend avoiding the following for at least the first 3 to 5 days:
- Running
- Weightlifting
- Cycling
- Yoga and Pilates
- Any activity that raises heart rate or causes sweating
Then avoid the following for at least the next 10 to 14 days:
- Heavy lifting
- High intensity workouts
- Inversions (such as downward-facing positions in yoga)
- Strenuous sports
Light walking is usually allowed early and often encouraged, but patients typically avoid anything that risks hitting the scalp or causing sweat buildup.
Sexual Activity
- Sexual activity raises blood pressure and heart rate.
- Many clinics advise avoiding sexual activity for at least 5 to 7 days, or until cleared.
Work & Daily Routines
- Many patients return to desk work within a few days if their environment is clean and does not involve heavy activity.
- Those who work in physically demanding jobs often wait up to 10 to 14 days or follow individualized instructions.
Travel
- Flying is usually considered safe within a few days, but patients often wait until swelling has decreased and they can comfortably follow aftercare instructions.
- Driving is avoided on the day of surgery due to medications typically taken during the procedure.
Alcohol
Alcohol can thin the blood and increase swelling. Many clinics recommend avoiding alcohol for:
- 48 hours before surgery
- Several days after surgery, or until cleared
Marijuana
Marijuana can also increase blood pressure and affect healing. Many clinics recommend avoiding it:
- Several days before surgery
- At least several days after surgery, depending on method of use
Eating & Drinking
Most patients benefit from:
- Staying well hydrated
- Eating balanced meals
- Avoiding excessive salt and alcohol, which may worsen swelling
These simple measures may support both transplanted and native hair over time and improve long-term results.
What Patients Commonly Avoid after Surgery
Avoid Scratching, Rubbing, or Picking
The transplanted area must remain undisturbed. This is critical for proper healing. While it may be tempting to touch grafts, scratch scabs, or rub the scalp, do not do these things as they can interfere with proper healing and later growth.
Avoid Hair Dyes, Chemical Treatments, or Heat Styling
Most patients wait until cleared by their clinic (which can be several weeks) before using hair dye, hot tools, chemical straighteners, or harsh styling products.
Avoid Smoking & Vaping
Smoking or vaping can negatively impact circulation and healing. Many patients choose to avoid them altogether both before and after surgery.
Avoid Tanning Devices
UV exposure can irritate the scalp and slow the healing process. Many patients avoid these devices altogether before and after surgery or if used, patients should protect their scalp until fully healed.
Follow-Up & Clinical Support
Every patient at The Hair Loss Doctors By Robert J. Dorin receives postoperative guidance and follow-up support. These visits allow the team to evaluate healing, answer questions, and update maintenance plans, when needed. Many patients attend a follow-up visit within a week or so and are always welcome to schedule additional virtual or in-person visits at any stage of recovery.
